The good stuff!

SSJC-FINAL

We’re in full swing already, even though the new school year doesn’t start for another few weeks. The planning for the Spartan Sports Journalism Classic has been underway since April, and we are getting more excited by the day for Oct. 20.

Invites are going out to alumni and friends via email and social media, and students will get their invites when school is back in session. Please consider being involved, from attending, to being part of the sessions, to the networking fair…to being a sponsor!!!

The Sports Journalism Education Abroad is a go for summer 2018, going to Paris and Rome for the month of June. Look for more info soon…and move fast if you are interested. The 2016 class sold out FAST. (and had an epic experience – relive it here.)

Here are some wonderful stories about MSU Sports JRN alumni, faculty and students…

  • MSU Sports JRN is featured in this Fox Sports U video, starting at 1:47. JRN418 students from S17, Shannon Kelly and Dimitri Babalis, get some air time. Shannon’s team, with Olivia Rubick and Grant Cislo, won the project challenge. Look for our students shining and our new Spartan Newsroom looking awesome!
  • Alum Craig Custance is in the new wave of sports journalism, part of the start-up The Athletic. The model is pay-for-access, and The Athletic is promising richer content for its subscribers. Read about Craig’s new job as editor-in-chief of the Detroit site. (And MSU JRN alumna Katie Strang is the managing editor/senior writer!)
  • Senior JRN student Brad Merlo has been the sports intern at FOX2 Detroit this summer. See what he’s been up to.
  • Sports Journalist in Residence Joanne C. Gerstner has won a national Clarion award for best non-fiction for her youth sports and concussion book, Back in the Game.
